"You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women"- Jawahar Lal Nehru.
Women empowerment means increasing the power of women by uplifting them socially, economically, politically. In ancient times, due to the lack of opportunities and health facilities, low status of women became a vicious circle that needed to be broken to enhance the development of India. Other problems have been bias in jobs, sexual harassment, domestic violence, marital discord which have actually hampered the women's overall development.
Law is a tool for women empowerment. Hindu Marriage act 1955 laid down the provisions of divorce and empowered women to bid goodbyes to their rotten married lives. Women can get share in their ancestral property due to an amendment in Hindu Succession act 1956. According to Muslim Shariyat act 1937 a Muslim women can also walk out of a marriage and get maintenance in form of "mehar".
Dowry is a stark reality. Though women are learning to raise up their voices against it but there are stack of complaints against harassment by in- laws. Dowry prevention act was laid down to safeguard women from domestic violence.
Despite of a long list of laws and acts, their inefficiencies have let us fall face down in the run of upliftment of women.
Women reservation bill which proposes to reserve 33% of seats for women in the lower house of Parliament of India, is yet a pending bill. Laws are said to grant justice to innocencents. Sadly, it's not true in cases of crime against women. Sexual assaults n rape cases are on rise. Ironically, in rape cases , victim is branded as a woman of low morals. It suddenly doesn't matter how brutal the rapist was! Importance is given to the clothes of the woman! How pathetic our mentality is! A 4 year girl doesn't wear vulgar clothes or doesn't invite rape. A young lady with mangalsutra doesn't crave for rape! The so called guardians of law i.e police n military personnel are the culprits in many a cases.
Who has forgotten the case of Priyadarshini Matto! And the famous No one killed Jessika case. A young girl is shot dead infront of 300 people and suddenly there is a "lack of evidence" just because there was a huge political pressure!! Shamefull!!
IRONICALLY, ON MARCH 8-THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY :- A DELHI UNIVERSITY GIRL WAS SHOT DEAD IN BROAD DAY LIGHT.
Women used to be a subordinate to men! But not any more. Kaplana Chawala did not go to space with her father or brother. P.T. Usha didn't used to stay in touch with her family for 24*7.
Even after 66 years of Independence, women are slaves. Right from female foeticide, infanticide, child marriages, sexual and domestic violence, makes one wonder at her emancipated status. The conditions are folly and petty.
A woman is neither safe in the womb nor in the out side world. The picture may seem sunny but a thick layer of fog n mist still need to be cleared. Wakeup India, Respect Women! Don't touch her feet in navratras but still atleast consider her as a human ...she is not an object of pleasure.
To conclude, I just wana say economic dependence has added to her confidence to march ahead & conquer the world but the daily battles that she fights everyday on this journey are not only painful but disgusting. It's the need of the hour that this development shouldn't be only restricted to privileged few but rather should be percolated to all sections of women uniformly.
2001 was ushered and declared to be the new dawn for the empowerment of women but we have woken up by the heinous gang rape case of Delhi on 2012. Unfortunately, half of India is still fast asleep!!!
